Packaging Cost Calculation Formula

The calculator treats primary packaging, labels and inserts as costs applied directly to each product. The cost of the master carton is divided by the number of products packed inside that carton to determine an allocated carton cost per unit.

The resulting packaging cost per unit is then multiplied by total product quantity.

Cost Allocation

Why Carton Cost Must Be Allocated per Product

A master carton normally contains multiple sellable products. Therefore, the entire cost of that carton should not be assigned to one product.

If a carton costs $2.50 and contains 20 products, the theoretical carton cost allocated to each product is $0.125. This allocated cost can then be combined with each product's primary packaging, tags and inserts.

This is particularly useful when comparing different packing configurations because changing pieces per carton can change the packaging cost allocated to each unit.
