A common export carton measuring 60 cm × 40 cm × 35 cm occupies 0.084 cubic metres.
Once the volume of one carton is known, multiply it by the number of cartons to estimate total shipment volume.
A compact carton measuring 50 × 40 × 30 cm occupies 0.060 CBM.
A shipment containing 250 identical cartons of 0.060 CBM each has a theoretical volume of 15 CBM.
CBM stands for cubic meter. It measures the amount of three-dimensional space occupied by cargo.
In international trade, CBM is frequently used to describe shipment volume for ocean freight, consolidated cargo, warehouse planning and container capacity calculations.
One cubic meter represents a volume measuring one metre long, one metre wide and one metre high.
For a rectangular carton, calculate volume by multiplying length × width × height after converting all measurements into metres.
If measurements are provided in centimetres, the direct formula is:
Length × Width × Height ÷ 1,000,000 = CBM per carton.
The divisor is one million because one cubic metre contains 1,000,000 cubic centimetres.
After calculating CBM for one carton, multiply the figure by the number of identical cartons in the shipment.
For example, if one carton occupies 0.084 CBM and the shipment contains 100 cartons, total shipment volume is 8.4 CBM.
If the shipment contains several carton sizes, calculate each carton group separately and add the resulting CBM values together.
Always make sure all dimensions use a consistent unit before calculating volume.

CBM used for logistics should reflect the physical space occupied by the shipment after products are folded, rolled, compressed, bagged and packed into transport cartons.
Home-textile products can have very different relationships between weight and volume. Cushions, pillows, comforters and filled products may consume significant space even when their net product weight is relatively low. Rugs and carpets can be dense but may require bulky rolled packaging.
CBM measures volume, while kilograms measure mass. Freight planning often requires both.
A shipment can be physically bulky but lightweight, or compact and very heavy. Ocean, air, courier and road carriers may therefore use different methods to determine chargeable freight.
Although both use shipment dimensions, CBM and volumetric weight serve different purposes. CBM measures physical cubic volume, while dimensional or volumetric weight converts package dimensions into a theoretical weight for carrier charging.
For courier or air freight planning, calculate both actual weight and volumetric weight and confirm the applicable carrier rule.
Less-than-container-load shipments combine cargo from multiple shippers into shared container space. Shipment cubic volume is therefore an important input in freight planning.
Actual LCL freight charging methods can also consider shipment weight, minimum charges, local handling, documentation and port costs. A CBM calculation alone should not be treated as a complete freight quotation.
Total carton CBM is useful for container planning, but dividing container volume by carton CBM does not guarantee that the calculated number of cartons will physically fit.
Real container utilization depends on carton orientation, internal container dimensions, loading pattern, door clearance, weight restrictions, pallets, void space and practical handling requirements.

A container's published internal cubic volume does not mean every cubic meter can always be filled with cartons.
Reducing unnecessary packaging volume can lower freight exposure, improve warehouse efficiency and increase container utilization. However, packaging should never be reduced below the level required to protect the product.
Import buyers should request expected packing details from suppliers before finalizing shipment budgets. Product price alone is not enough to understand import economics.
If freight is quoted for the complete shipment, buyers can allocate the estimated freight charge across saleable units to understand freight cost per product.
Packaging optimization that reduces total shipment volume can therefore improve landed-cost economics even when the ex-factory product cost remains unchanged.
If an order contains several carton dimensions, calculate each group separately.
For example, calculate the CBM of 50 cartons of Size A, then 30 cartons of Size B, then add both totals together. This produces a more accurate shipment volume than averaging carton dimensions.
