A 150 cm wide fabric provides 1.5 square metres in every linear meter. At 200 GSM, one meter theoretically weighs 0.30 kg.
Higher GSM means more fabric weight is contained in each linear meter. Therefore the equivalent kilogram price can be lower even when the meter price is higher.
A fabric quoted in Indian rupees can be converted in exactly the same way, provided all monetary inputs use the same currency.
To convert fabric price per meter into price per kilogram, you first need to know how much one linear meter of the fabric weighs. That weight depends primarily on the fabric's width and GSM.
A linear meter of a 140 cm wide fabric covers 1.4 square metres. If that fabric weighs 250 grams per square metre, one linear meter theoretically weighs 350 grams, or 0.35 kg.
If the supplier charges $4.50 per meter, dividing $4.50 by 0.35 kg produces an equivalent price of approximately $12.86 per kilogram.
Fabric price per meter cannot be converted accurately into kilogram pricing using GSM alone. Fabric width must also be known because a wider roll contains more square metres in each linear meter.
For example, one meter of 100 cm wide fabric has an area of 1 m², whereas one meter of 150 cm wide fabric has an area of 1.5 m². At the same GSM, the 150 cm fabric therefore weighs 50% more per linear meter.
