A supplier may quote a product at $6.50 per piece, but the buyer can still incur packaging, transport, duty, testing, clearance and other expenses before that product reaches the warehouse.
If these expenses are commercially attributable to the order, the buyer's effective cost per unit can therefore be higher than the original supplier unit price.
The appropriate components depend on whether you are analysing factory production cost, FOB cost, landed cost or another commercial basis.
Manufacturers frequently calculate cost per unit by allocating direct material, direct labour and appropriate manufacturing overhead across the quantity produced.
For textile products, this can include fabric or yarn, dyeing, weaving, printing, embroidery, stitching, finishing, trims, packaging and factory overhead depending on the product and costing method.

Packaging can range from a simple polybag to sophisticated retail-ready presentation. Branded boxes, hangtags, printed inserts, barcodes and sustainable packaging systems can create meaningful additional unit costs.
When packaging suppliers have separate minimum order quantities, unused packaging inventory can also affect the real economics of a private-label programme.
A simple calculation divides total freight expense by total quantity. This approach works when products are reasonably similar.
For mixed shipments containing products with substantially different dimensions or weights, buyers may prefer a more advanced freight-allocation method based on weight, CBM or another commercial allocation rule.

For conservative costing, buyers can enter their expected saleable quantity instead of the gross production quantity.
Every monetary input in the calculator should be entered in the same currency. Do not combine USD product cost with EUR freight or INR inspection charges without converting those values first.
