A 200 cm finished curtain using 3× fullness requires approximately 600 cm of flat width before converting that requirement into whole fabric widths.
If 600 cm of flat curtain width is required and the usable fabric width is 140 cm, 600 ÷ 140 = approximately 4.29. Because partial fabric widths cannot normally satisfy the full width, the requirement rounds up to five widths.
Top and bottom allowances increase the amount of fabric cut for every vertical drop.
A patterned curtain requiring an initial 285 cm cut drop must normally be increased to a whole number of pattern repeats for matching.
Curtain fullness describes the relationship between the amount of flat fabric in a curtain and its finished width after gathering or pleating.
With 3× fullness, approximately three times the finished width is provided before the curtain is gathered or formed into pleats. A finished treatment measuring 200 cm across therefore starts with approximately 600 cm of flat curtain width.

Three-times fullness can create more pronounced folds, pleats and visual depth because significantly more fabric is distributed across the finished width.
Fullness directly affects the horizontal amount of material in the finished curtain. Moving from 2× to 3× fullness increases the required flat width by 50% before other production considerations.
For a 300 cm finished curtain treatment, 2× fullness requires approximately 600 cm of flat width, while 3× fullness requires approximately 900 cm.
This increase can materially affect fabric cost, sewing, joining, lining consumption, packaging volume and finished curtain weight.
The usable width of the fabric determines how many vertical widths or drops must be joined to create the required flat curtain width.
For example, a curtain requiring 600 cm of flat width needs five drops from 140 cm wide fabric because 600 ÷ 140 is approximately 4.29 and must be rounded upward.
With a different usable fabric width, the number of drops and resulting linear consumption can change substantially.

The finished curtain drop is not normally the same as the length of fabric that must be cut. Manufacturers need additional material for top construction and bottom hemming.
A finished drop of 250 cm with a 15 cm header allowance and a 20 cm bottom hem creates a basic cut drop of approximately 285 cm before pattern-repeat adjustment.
Different heading systems can require different construction allowances and may also influence the recommended fullness ratio. Buyers should define the curtain heading before approving final fabric consumption.
Patterned curtain fabric often requires adjacent widths to be aligned so the design continues correctly across seams. This can increase the cut length of every drop.
If a calculated basic cut drop falls between complete pattern repeats, manufacturers may need to round upward to the next full repeat.
Plain or non-directional fabrics often allow simpler cutting because pattern matching is not required. Patterned, embroidered, striped, velvet or directional fabrics may need additional planning.
Even when pattern repeat is zero, buyers should still confirm fabric direction, pile direction and visible design orientation before approving production consumption.

If large side hems are required and fabric widths are being used very close to their maximum useful dimension, the factory may need additional width or a modified cutting plan.

For projects with different window dimensions, calculate each size separately and combine the results during final material planning.
The primary calculation estimates the main face fabric only. Lining and interlining should be calculated separately because their width, fullness, construction and allowances may differ.
For premium curtain programmes, buyers should specify whether lining is standard, blackout, thermal, cotton, polyester or another construction.
Blackout curtains can use either inherently blackout fabric or a decorative face fabric combined with a separate blackout lining.
If separate lining is used, calculate the main decorative fabric and lining independently. Their widths, pattern requirements and fullness assumptions may not be identical.
Wide-width or extra-wide curtain fabric can sometimes reduce the number of joined vertical widths. In certain applications, fabric may also be railroaded so its width runs vertically rather than horizontally.
Railroaded construction requires a different consumption method from this standard drop-based calculation. Confirm fabric direction, design orientation and maximum available width before using a railroaded cutting method.
Because 3× fullness consumes substantially more material than lower fullness ratios, it can increase both material and production cost.
Large curtain programmes require accurate material planning because small differences in consumption per set can multiply across hundreds of windows.
