Most conventional curtain fabrics are manufactured at a fixed roll width. Once the required flat curtain width has been calculated, it must be divided by the usable width of the fabric.
Because partial conventional fabric widths cannot normally provide a complete vertical drop without joining, the calculated number of widths is generally rounded upward to the next whole width.
The finished curtain drop represents the visible final vertical dimension. The cut drop must normally be longer because fabric is required for the top heading and bottom hem.
For example, a 240 cm finished curtain might require a 15 cm heading allowance and 20 cm bottom allowance. Before considering pattern repeat, the theoretical cut drop would therefore be approximately 275 cm.
Patterned curtain fabrics often require adjacent widths to be matched horizontally. When a fabric has a vertical repeat, each cut drop may need to start at the same point in the design.
As a result, the cut drop is often rounded upward to a complete multiple of the vertical pattern repeat. Large repeats can therefore materially increase fabric consumption compared with a plain fabric.
The appropriate fullness depends on heading style, fabric characteristics and intended visual appearance. A higher fullness ratio generally requires more fabric and produces a fuller treatment.

Some curtain fabrics are produced at approximately 280 cm, 300 cm or even wider. Wide-width fabrics can sometimes be used across the curtain width instead of as conventional vertical drops.
This approach is often called railroaded or cross-width use. It can reduce seams and dramatically change fabric consumption, but it is only suitable when the fabric construction, design direction and usable width allow it.
The standard calculation on this page assumes conventional vertical drops rather than specialized railroaded cutting.
The calculated result estimates the primary face-fabric consumption only. Lining and interlining should normally be calculated separately because their fabric widths, fullness, hems, shrinkage and construction allowances can be different.
The mathematical fullness ratio may be fixed at 2.5×, but practical consumption can still change depending on fabric characteristics.
Even after calculating widths and cut drops, actual production can require additional fabric. Buyers and manufacturers therefore commonly allow some percentage for production losses.
