What Does CBM Mean in Shipping?

CBM stands for cubic meter. It measures the volume occupied by a three-dimensional object or shipment.

In international trade, CBM is commonly used to communicate shipment volume between buyers, suppliers, freight forwarders and logistics companies. If a shipment occupies 10 cubic meters of space, its volume can be described as 10 CBM.

CBM is particularly important for ocean freight because container and LCL capacity is heavily influenced by physical shipment volume.

A shipment totaling 60 CBM does not necessarily fit perfectly into exactly 60 CBM of container space. Real loading involves three-dimensional carton orientation and unavoidable unused spaces.
