When all cartons have identical packed dimensions, multiply the CBM of one carton by the total carton quantity.
Home-textile products such as cushion covers may be packed into relatively compact cartons depending on folding and compression.
Larger cartons may appear more packing-efficient per piece but can affect handling, carton strength and container-loading efficiency.

Freight planning is based on the physical space occupied by the shipment. Therefore, buyers should use the outside dimensions of the final packed carton rather than the usable internal dimensions printed in a packaging specification.
Cartons can also expand slightly after being packed. Soft goods, rugs, cushions, bedding and other compressible textiles may create carton bulging if the packing ratio is too aggressive.
CBM helps buyers estimate how much physical freight space their order may require. It can affect freight quotations, shipment consolidation, container selection, warehousing and commercial landed-cost calculations.
A container has a theoretical internal cubic capacity, but the total CBM of cartons does not translate directly into perfect physical loading. Carton shape, orientation, unused gaps, container dimensions, pallets and weight restrictions can reduce practical utilization.

A shipment totaling 60 CBM does not necessarily fit perfectly into exactly 60 CBM of container space. Real loading involves three-dimensional carton orientation and unavoidable unused spaces.
Use a dedicated container-loading calculation or physical loading plan before confirming the number of cartons that can fit into a container.
Less-than-container-load shipping allows multiple shippers' cargo to share container space. Because the freight provider must allocate space among different shipments, cubic volume is an important commercial measurement.
Actual LCL billing can depend on both shipment volume and gross weight, together with origin, destination, carrier and freight-forwarder charging rules.
CBM measures physical cubic volume, while volumetric or dimensional weight converts package dimensions into a theoretical chargeable weight used by many air-freight and courier services.
A shipment can therefore have low physical weight but high volumetric weight if it occupies a large amount of space.

Volume alone does not provide a complete freight picture. Export shipments should normally be evaluated using both total CBM and gross weight.
Home-textile products can vary significantly in packing efficiency. Cushion covers may fold into relatively small cartons, while filled cushions, rugs, quilts, comforters and bulky throws may occupy much more volume relative to their product value.
Packaging optimization can therefore have a meaningful impact on freight cost and landed cost.
Reducing unnecessary packaging volume can improve logistics efficiency without necessarily changing the product. However, packing should still protect goods against moisture, crushing and handling damage.
If your shipment contains several carton sizes, calculate each carton group separately and then add the CBM totals together.
For example, calculate the total volume of Size A cartons, calculate the total volume of Size B cartons, then combine both results to obtain overall shipment CBM.
