A common rectangular carpet size has an area of 3.68 m². Multiplying the area by the commercial rate provides the theoretical cost per piece.
A 200 × 300 cm carpet covers 6 m². At a supplier rate of $24 per square metre, the theoretical unit price is $144.
Round carpets require the circular area formula rather than diameter multiplied by diameter.
If a supplier quotes a finished unit price rather than an area rate, enter the fixed price per piece.
A common method of calculating carpet cost is to determine the finished surface area and multiply it by a rate per square metre or square foot. This is particularly useful when a supplier provides standard construction pricing by area.
However, the relationship between area and price is not always perfectly linear. Different sizes can create changes in production efficiency, yarn requirements, weaving or tufting time, finishing and packing.
Price per square metre is a practical way to compare carpet sizes when the underlying material and construction remain substantially the same. It allows buyers to convert multiple dimensions into a common commercial basis.
For example, a 160 × 230 cm carpet has an area of 3.68 m². If the agreed rate is $28 per m², the theoretical area-based price is $103.04 per piece.
Actual supplier quotations may still include minimum charges, size-specific adjustments, design costs or quantity-related price breaks.
Some buyers and markets work with square feet rather than square metres. The universal calculator can calculate carpet area internally and apply a price per square foot when that is the commercial basis used by the supplier.
When comparing quotations, make sure the conversion method and quoted unit are clearly identified to avoid comparing a per-square-foot rate with a per-square-metre rate.
Accurate cost calculations begin with the correct surface-area formula. Rectangular, circular and oval carpets do not use the same calculation.

Surface area is useful for converting a supplier rate into unit price, but the supplier rate itself depends heavily on the material specification.
Carpets of the same dimensions and fibre can carry very different prices because manufacturing techniques require different amounts of labour, machinery, yarn and finishing.
Higher finished weight or pile weight generally means more material is used per square metre, although the relationship between GSM and price is not always directly proportional.
Material type, yarn cost, backing, pile height and production method should be evaluated together with GSM when comparing prices.
A simple solid or geometric carpet and a highly detailed multi-colour design may have identical dimensions but different production costs.
Order quantity can influence the commercial price even when area and construction remain unchanged. Material purchasing, dyeing, yarn preparation, setup, development and packaging costs may be distributed more efficiently over larger quantities.
An area-based manufacturing estimate is not automatically the same as the final FOB export price. A commercial quotation can include packing, handling, export preparation, inland logistics, documentation, compliance requirements, financial costs and supplier margin.

The supplier price is only one part of the cost of importing carpets. Buyers may also need to consider freight, insurance, customs duty, import VAT or GST, customs clearance, destination handling and local transport.
