If a product theoretically requires 1 metre of fabric but production needs 1.08 metres after allowing for waste, costing only the theoretical 1 metre understates the actual material requirement by 8%.
For accurate commercial costing, material cost should generally be based on expected production consumption rather than only the theoretical net dimensions.
When comparing supplier quotations, buyers should understand whether fabric consumption includes realistic production allowances. A supplier using an unrealistically low material consumption may initially appear cheaper but later face shortages or cost revisions.
