Measure the full rug diameter
Measure across the widest part of the circular rug, passing through the centre. This full measurement is the diameter.
Round rugs require a circular-area calculation rather than simply multiplying two dimensions. Enter the finished rug diameter and approximate GSM to estimate the rug's surface area, weight per piece and total order weight.
This free tool is designed for importers, retailers, rug brands, wholesalers, sourcing teams and manufacturers evaluating round-rug specifications before production or shipment.
Enter the finished diameter, approximate finished GSM and order quantity. The calculator determines circular area and estimates weight per rug and total order weight.
Estimates generated by this calculator are for preliminary planning only. Actual manufacturing cost, finished weight, material consumption, packing, freight, duty, container utilization or other commercial results may vary according to construction, specifications, production method and supplier.
Round rugs are increasingly used in living rooms, bedrooms, children's spaces, hospitality interiors, entry areas and decorative collections. Unlike rectangular rugs, however, their surface area cannot be calculated by multiplying diameter by diameter.
Primeval's Round Rug Weight Calculator calculates the true circular area from the finished rug diameter and then applies the entered GSM to estimate finished product weight.
The calculation can help international buyers and sourcing teams estimate product weight before final samples or bulk production data are available. The result may be useful for early-stage manufacturing comparisons, packaging decisions, order-weight planning and freight analysis.
Actual finished rug weight may differ because of fibre composition, pile height, pile density, backing, latex application, weaving or tufting variation, finishing and moisture. For final shipping documentation, physical production weights should always be used.
Enter your specifications and use the result as a practical starting point for product, sourcing and shipment planning.

Add the intended finished diameter in centimetres. Common round rug diameters include approximately 90 cm, 120 cm, 150 cm, 180 cm, 200 cm, 240 cm and 300 cm.
Add the approximate finished product weight per square metre. For accurate sourcing or freight estimates, confirm whether the factory specification represents pile weight or total finished weight.
Add the total number of round rugs to estimate combined net product weight for the order.
The calculator divides the diameter by two to determine radius and applies the circular area formula π × radius².
The calculated area is multiplied by GSM to estimate individual rug weight and total theoretical order weight.
A round rug first requires a circular-area calculation. The diameter is divided by two to obtain the radius. Circular surface area is calculated from π × radius². That area is then multiplied by finished GSM to estimate rug weight.
See how typical values translate into a useful planning estimate.
A 120 cm diameter rug has a radius of 60 cm or 0.60 metres. Its circular area is approximately 1.131 m².
A popular medium-size round rug with a 150 cm diameter has approximately 1.767 m² of surface area.
As diameter increases, circular surface area rises rapidly because the radius is squared in the area formula.
A two-metre round rug has an area of approximately 3.142 square metres.
A three-metre circular rug has significantly more area than a two-metre rug, even though the diameter is only 50% greater.
If a 180 cm finished rug weighs approximately 7.63 kg, an order of 100 identical rugs has an estimated net product weight of approximately 763 kg.
Rectangular rug area is normally calculated by multiplying width by length. A round rug is different because its usable surface is a circle.
If a buyer incorrectly calculates a 200 cm round rug as 2 metres × 2 metres, the resulting area would be 4 m². The true circular area is only approximately 3.142 m². That difference can materially distort weight, material and freight estimates.
A dedicated round rug calculator therefore uses the circular area formula before applying GSM.
To calculate circular rug area, first convert the finished diameter into metres. Divide the diameter by two to obtain the radius. Then multiply π by the radius squared.
The diameter is the complete measurement across a round rug through its centre. The radius is only the distance from the centre to the outer edge.
Radius is therefore always half the diameter. A 200 cm diameter round rug has a radius of 100 cm.
| Diameter | Radius | Diameter in Metres |
|---|---|---|
| 90 cm | 45 cm | 0.90 m |
| 120 cm | 60 cm | 1.20 m |
| 150 cm | 75 cm | 1.50 m |
| 180 cm | 90 cm | 1.80 m |
| 200 cm | 100 cm | 2.00 m |
| 240 cm | 120 cm | 2.40 m |
| 300 cm | 150 cm | 3.00 m |
The following table shows mathematical circular areas for common round rug diameters.
| Round Rug Diameter | Radius | Approx. Area | Approx. Area in ft² |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 cm | 45 cm | 0.636 m² | 6.85 ft² |
| 120 cm | 60 cm | 1.131 m² | 12.18 ft² |
| 150 cm | 75 cm | 1.767 m² | 19.02 ft² |
| 180 cm | 90 cm | 2.545 m² | 27.39 ft² |
| 200 cm | 100 cm | 3.142 m² | 33.82 ft² |
| 240 cm | 120 cm | 4.524 m² | 48.69 ft² |
| 300 cm | 150 cm | 7.069 m² | 76.09 ft² |
These are mathematical examples based on circular area × GSM. They are not standard product weights.
| Diameter | Area | 2,000 GSM | 2,500 GSM | 3,000 GSM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 90 cm | 0.636 m² | 1.27 kg | 1.59 kg | 1.91 kg |
| 120 cm | 1.131 m² | 2.26 kg | 2.83 kg | 3.39 kg |
| 150 cm | 1.767 m² | 3.53 kg | 4.42 kg | 5.30 kg |
| 180 cm | 2.545 m² | 5.09 kg | 6.36 kg | 7.63 kg |
| 200 cm | 3.142 m² | 6.28 kg | 7.85 kg | 9.42 kg |
| 240 cm | 4.524 m² | 9.05 kg | 11.31 kg | 13.57 kg |
| 300 cm | 7.069 m² | 14.14 kg | 17.67 kg | 21.21 kg |
Circular area increases according to the square of the radius. This means round-rug size does not scale linearly with diameter.
A 100 cm round rug has an area of approximately 0.785 m². A 200 cm round rug has an area of approximately 3.142 m² — approximately four times the area, despite having only twice the diameter.
If construction and GSM remain identical, theoretical product weight also becomes approximately four times greater.
GSM means grams per square metre. Once the circular surface area of the rug is known, multiplying area by finished GSM estimates the number of grams in the finished rug.
For example, a 200 cm diameter rug has an area of approximately 3.142 m². At 2,500 GSM, its theoretical weight is approximately 7,854 grams, or 7.85 kg.
When using this calculator, buyers should determine whether the weight specification supplied by a manufacturer represents pile weight or complete finished product weight.
Pile weight may represent only the visible face yarn. A finished hand-tufted rug can additionally contain foundation cloth, adhesive or latex, backing fabric, binding and finishing materials.
For logistics and handling estimates, use total finished-product weight per square metre whenever available.
The circular shape determines surface area, but manufacturing construction determines how much material exists within that area.
No single fibre has one standard rug weight. The quantity and structure of the material matter as much as fibre composition itself.
The appropriate round-rug diameter depends on furniture arrangement, intended visual effect and available floor area. Buyers developing retail collections commonly offer several diameters so customers can select according to room scale.
Increasing diameter affects not only rug weight but also manufacturing and handling. Large circular rugs may require larger tufting or weaving capacity, more careful shaping, additional edge finishing and larger working areas.
Factories should therefore confirm maximum production dimensions before buyers finalize very large custom round-rug specifications.
Unlike a rectangular rug with straight edges and corners, round rugs require continuous curved finishing. Depending on construction, this may involve binding, serging, stitching, braided finishing or specialized edge techniques.
Edge-finishing material contributes to actual finished weight but is not separately calculated by this theoretical GSM model.
Round rug weight can affect sourcing, packaging and logistics decisions throughout the buying process.
The calculator estimates net theoretical rug weight. It does not automatically include packaging.
Round rugs may be rolled, folded or individually wrapped depending on diameter and construction. Polybags, woven bags, cartons, cardboard tubes, labels, protective layers, strapping and pallets can increase the actual gross shipment weight.
Estimated product weight can provide an early input for freight planning, but carriers may require much more information.
For air and courier shipments, packed dimensions can create a volumetric or dimensional weight that exceeds actual scale weight. Ocean container planning must consider both packed volume and total gross weight.
Use the Round Rug Weight Calculator together with Primeval's CBM, Volumetric Weight and Container Loading calculators when planning shipments.
If a sample and target rug use the same yarn, pile, backing, density and construction, the actual sample can provide a useful reference.
First calculate the sample's circular area. Divide measured sample weight by its area to determine effective finished GSM. That GSM can then be applied to the target diameter.
This approach is more meaningful than scaling only by diameter because circular area changes according to diameter squared.
Consider two rugs using identical construction. A 100 cm rug has a radius of 0.5 metres and an area of approximately 0.785 m². A 200 cm rug has a radius of 1 metre and an area of approximately 3.142 m².
The second rug therefore has four times the surface area. At identical finished GSM, its theoretical weight would also be approximately four times greater.
Weight should not be used as the sole indicator of rug quality. Higher weight may indicate greater material content, denser pile or heavier backing, but overall quality depends on multiple factors.
A precise specification helps manufacturers evaluate construction, material consumption, production feasibility, weight and price more accurately.
The Round Rug Weight Calculator uses mathematically calculated circular area and the GSM entered by the user. It does not physically weigh a rug.
Actual production weight may vary because of yarn characteristics, pile density, backing, latex, edge finishing, washing, moisture content, dimensional tolerance and normal manufacturing variation.
Use actual finished product and packed shipment weights for final commercial documents, freight bookings and customs declarations.
Round rugs from different suppliers should only be compared when dimensions, construction and the basis of the weight specification are equivalent.
Small diameter differences affect circular area and therefore total theoretical weight.
Check whether quoted GSM represents pile weight or complete finished product weight.
Hand-tufted, braided, flatwoven and woven round rugs can have very different weight profiles.
Backing cloth, latex and anti-slip materials can materially affect finished weight.
Natural fibres and handmade manufacturing can create normal production variation.
Measure representative samples when accurate logistics or quality-control data are required.
