When construction and GSM remain the same, theoretical finished weight therefore also increases approximately four times.
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It expresses how much one square metre of the specified construction weighs.
If a rug has a finished weight specification of 2,500 GSM, each square metre theoretically contributes approximately 2.5 kg to the finished product weight.
A 3.68 m² rug at 2,500 GSM therefore has a theoretical weight of 9.20 kg.

Finished dimensions alone do not determine rug weight. A 160 × 230 cm flatweave rug may weigh much less than a dense hand-tufted rug of exactly the same dimensions.
Material composition matters, but fibre name alone does not provide enough information to predict rug weight. Yarn thickness, construction density and backing must also be considered.
Hand-tufted rugs deserve special attention because the visible pile is only part of the complete finished construction. Yarn is tufted through a primary foundation and is commonly secured using latex before a secondary backing is applied.
As a result, pile-weight specifications may significantly understate the finished rug weight used for packing and freight planning.
For a hand-tufted rectangular rug, use an actual finished sample weight or reliable total-finished-GSM specification whenever possible.
Flatweave rugs use interlaced warp and weft yarns rather than a conventional raised pile. Their weight can vary according to yarn thickness, weave density, fibre and finishing.
