What Is a Volumetric Weight Calculator?

Freight cost is not always determined only by the number of kilograms shown on a weighing scale. A large carton containing lightweight products can occupy significantly more cargo space than a compact carton of the same physical weight. For this reason, many air-freight, express and courier services use a dimensional or volumetric weight calculation.

What Is Volumetric Weight?

Volumetric weight, also called dimensional weight, is a calculated weight based on the amount of physical space a package occupies rather than only its mass on a weighing scale.

The concept is particularly relevant when shipping bulky but lightweight products. A carton of lightweight cushion inserts, pillows, quilts or other low-density products can occupy more transportation capacity than a much heavier compact carton.

Dimensional-weight calculations help logistics providers relate package volume to freight capacity.

The expressions volumetric weight and dimensional weight are commonly used for the same general concept: converting package dimensions into an equivalent planning weight.

How Volumetric Weight Is Calculated

For carton dimensions expressed in centimetres, multiply external length, width and height to calculate cubic centimetres. That figure is divided by the applicable dimensional divisor to obtain an estimated volumetric weight in kilograms.

For multiple identical cartons, multiply the dimensional weight per carton by the number of cartons.

What Is a Volumetric Weight Divisor?

The divisor converts package volume into an equivalent dimensional weight. A lower divisor produces a higher calculated volumetric weight for the same carton dimensions, while a higher divisor produces a lower dimensional weight.

There is no reason to assume one divisor will apply to every shipment. The actual value can depend on the carrier, freight mode, service level, origin, destination, contract and quotation conditions.

Volumetric Weight Is Not Automatically the Final Chargeable Weight

A dimensional-weight calculation alone does not establish the final amount on a freight invoice. Freight services may compare dimensional weight with actual gross weight and may apply rounding, minimum-charge, consolidation or other commercial rules.

The calculator therefore reports volumetric weight rather than claiming to calculate a confirmed carrier chargeable weight.

If every carton has identical dimensions, simply calculate dimensional weight per carton and multiply by the number of cartons.
