This is a common European-style rug dimension. Convert both dimensions to metres and multiply width by length.
A 2 × 3 metre rug provides six square metres of surface area.
A round rug should not be calculated by multiplying diameter by diameter. Its area is based on the radius of the circle.
An oval rug is treated as an ellipse using half the overall width and half the overall length.
Imperial dimensions can be entered directly by selecting feet as the measurement unit.
Rug dimensions describe the length and width of a product, while rug area describes the total surface covered by those dimensions. Area creates a useful common denominator when comparing different sizes.
For example, a 160 × 230 cm rug and a 200 × 300 cm rug may belong to the same collection, but their material requirements and finished weight can differ significantly because the second rug contains substantially more surface area.
Most standard rugs are rectangular. To calculate their area, multiply the finished width by the finished length after converting both dimensions to the same unit.
For example, a 160 × 230 cm rug is 1.60 × 2.30 metres. Its area is therefore 3.68 square metres.
A square is a rectangle in which all four sides have equal length. Area is therefore calculated by multiplying the side length by itself.
A 200 × 200 cm rug measures 2 × 2 metres and has an area of 4 square metres.
Round rugs require a circular area calculation. First divide the diameter by two to determine the radius. The area equals pi multiplied by the radius squared.
This distinction is important because a 200 cm round rug does not cover the same floor area as a 200 × 200 cm square rug. The 200 cm round rug covers approximately 3.142 m², while the square covers 4 m².
An oval rug can be treated as an ellipse when the shape follows a regular symmetrical curve. The area is calculated using half the overall width and half the overall length.
This method works well for conventional elliptical rugs but may not accurately represent irregular organic or free-form shapes.

International rug buyers often work with both metric and imperial measurements. Indian and European manufacturers commonly work in centimetres and metres, while buyers in markets such as the United States frequently specify rugs in feet and inches.

Some rug quotations use a price per square metre or price per square foot. In these cases, surface area can be multiplied by the commercial rate to estimate the price per piece.
However, buyers should not assume that every rug can be priced using a simple area rate. Construction, design complexity, material, colour count, finishing, backing, MOQ and size can all affect actual factory pricing.
If the approximate finished GSM of a rug is known, area can be used to estimate theoretical finished weight.
For example, a 160 × 230 cm rug has an area of 3.68 m². At an effective finished weight of 2,500 GSM, its theoretical product weight is approximately 9.2 kg.
Actual weight can differ because of construction, pile density, yarn, backing, latex, finishing and manufacturing tolerance.
Surface area is an important input for material planning, but area alone cannot accurately calculate yarn consumption. Manufacturing teams also need construction-specific values such as pile weight, yarn count, density, wastage, backing requirements and process loss.
A rug with the same finished area may consume significantly different quantities of material depending on whether it is hand tufted, flatwoven, hand knotted, braided or machine made.
Area makes differences between rug sizes easier to understand. Looking only at length can sometimes underestimate how much larger one rug is than another.
For example, a 200 × 300 cm rug has an area of 6 m², while a 160 × 230 cm rug has an area of 3.68 m². The larger rug has approximately 63% more surface area, even though neither individual dimension appears dramatically larger.
A common sizing mistake is to assume that a 200 cm round rug and a 200 × 200 cm square rug have similar surface areas because both measure 200 cm across.
The square rug covers 4 m². The round rug covers only approximately 3.142 m². This means the square has roughly 27% more surface area than the circle.
This distinction can materially affect product weight, material consumption and cost.
Organic, scalloped, asymmetric, animal-shaped and other irregular rugs may not match a standard geometric formula. For preliminary planning, the shape can sometimes be divided into smaller geometric areas or approximated using its maximum dimensions.
For accurate production costing, irregular designs should normally be evaluated using the actual artwork, technical drawing, CAD outline or cutting pattern.
Surface area is particularly useful when buyers compare handmade rug constructions because specifications frequently vary by size.
Hand-tufted, handwoven, flatwoven, hand-knotted and braided rugs can all use area as a geometric reference, while the production method determines the actual material consumption, labour and commercial rate.
Terms such as small, medium, large or 8 × 10 rug may not always define the exact finished specification required by a buyer. Nominal retail sizing can also vary slightly from actual factory dimensions.
For commercial sourcing, buyers should specify the intended finished width and length or diameter together with the acceptable dimensional tolerance.
Although area is useful for comparing rug sizes and converting area-based rates, actual sourcing prices require a complete product specification.
A rug manufacturer may need material composition, yarn quality, construction, pile height, weight, colour count, design complexity, finishing, backing, quantity, packaging and testing requirements before a reliable quotation can be prepared.

Hand tufted, woven, knotted and braided rugs should not be compared solely by square-metre area.
