What Is a Round Rug Weight Calculator?

Why Round Rug Weight Requires a Different Calculation

Rectangular rug area is normally calculated by multiplying width by length. A round rug is different because its usable surface is a circle.

If a buyer incorrectly calculates a 200 cm round rug as 2 metres × 2 metres, the resulting area would be 4 m². The true circular area is only approximately 3.142 m². That difference can materially distort weight, material and freight estimates.

How to Calculate the Area of a Round Rug

To calculate circular rug area, first convert the finished diameter into metres. Divide the diameter by two to obtain the radius. Then multiply π by the radius squared.

What Is the Difference Between Diameter and Radius?

The diameter is the complete measurement across a round rug through its centre. The radius is only the distance from the centre to the outer edge.

Radius is therefore always half the diameter. A 200 cm diameter round rug has a radius of 100 cm.

Why Doubling Round Rug Diameter Creates About Four Times the Area

Circular area increases according to the square of the radius. This means round-rug size does not scale linearly with diameter.

A 100 cm round rug has an area of approximately 0.785 m². A 200 cm round rug has an area of approximately 3.142 m² — approximately four times the area, despite having only twice the diameter.

If construction and GSM remain identical, theoretical product weight also becomes approximately four times greater.

How GSM Is Used to Estimate Round Rug Weight

GSM means grams per square metre. Once the circular surface area of the rug is known, multiplying area by finished GSM estimates the number of grams in the finished rug.

For example, a 200 cm diameter rug has an area of approximately 3.142 m². At 2,500 GSM, its theoretical weight is approximately 7,854 grams, or 7.85 kg.

For logistics and handling estimates, use total finished-product weight per square metre whenever available.

If a sample and target rug use the same yarn, pile, backing, density and construction, the actual sample can provide a useful reference.

First calculate the sample's circular area. Divide measured sample weight by its area to determine effective finished GSM. That GSM can then be applied to the target diameter.

This approach is more meaningful than scaling only by diameter because circular area changes according to diameter squared.

Consider two rugs using identical construction. A 100 cm rug has a radius of 0.5 metres and an area of approximately 0.785 m². A 200 cm rug has a radius of 1 metre and an area of approximately 3.142 m².

The second rug therefore has four times the surface area. At identical finished GSM, its theoretical weight would also be approximately four times greater.
