A 140 cm wide fabric has 1.4 square metres of area in every linear meter. At 250 GSM, one meter theoretically weighs 350 grams or 0.35 kg.
A lighter fabric requires fewer kilograms for the same linear length when width is unchanged.
A heavier fabric increases kilograms consumed by every linear meter and therefore increases meter cost when the kilogram rate is unchanged.
If a 250 GSM, 140 cm wide fabric weighs approximately 0.35 kg per meter, a 1,000 meter purchase theoretically represents around 350 kg.
When fabric is quoted by weight, the price of one linear meter depends on how much that meter weighs. Fabric GSM tells us the weight of one square metre, while fabric width tells us how many square metres are contained in one linear meter.
For example, one meter of fabric that is 1.4 metres wide has an area of 1.4 m². If that fabric is 250 GSM, the theoretical weight of one linear meter is 350 grams or 0.35 kg. At $8 per kilogram, its theoretical meter price is $2.80.
If the price per kilogram stays the same, heavier GSM fabric generally costs more per linear meter because every meter contains more material by weight.
A 400 GSM fabric and a 200 GSM fabric with identical widths have very different weights per linear meter. The 400 GSM fabric theoretically uses twice as much weight over the same area.
Linear meters describe length, not area. A one-meter length of 100 cm wide fabric contains less material area than a one-meter length of 150 cm wide fabric.
Therefore, two fabrics with the same GSM and same kilogram price can have different prices per linear meter simply because their widths are different.
To convert GSM into linear-meter weight, convert fabric width into metres and multiply it by the GSM.

The relationship can also be reversed. Once the theoretical weight of one meter is known, divide one kilogram by the kilograms consumed per linear meter.
For example, a 250 GSM fabric at 140 cm width theoretically weighs 0.35 kg per meter. One kilogram therefore represents approximately 2.86 linear meters.
This figure is useful when mills quote minimum quantities in kilograms while a product BOM or production plan is expressed in meters.
International textile businesses may use either metres or yards. One yard equals approximately 0.9144 metres. Therefore, the price of one yard is approximately 91.44% of the price of one meter when referring to identical fabric.
Always check which linear unit is being quoted before comparing supplier prices.
A lower price per kilogram does not automatically mean a lower fabric cost per meter. Buyers should compare the complete specification.
