The calculator first increases the finished cushion dimensions by the seam allowance. How Much Fabric Is Needed for a Cushion Cover?

The amount of fabric needed for a cushion cover depends on the finished size, cut dimensions, panel arrangement, usable fabric width, seam allowance and production wastage. A simple square cushion therefore does not have one universal fabric-consumption figure.

Why Finished Cushion Size Is Not the Same as Cut Size

A cushion cover measuring 45 × 45 cm after sewing cannot normally be cut exactly 45 × 45 cm. Additional material is needed around the edges so the panels can be stitched together.

If a factory uses a 1.5 cm seam allowance on each edge, a simplified cut panel for a 45 × 45 cm finished cushion becomes approximately 48 × 48 cm before considering any special construction, shrinkage or decoration requirements.
