Larger cushions consume more material per piece and may also create different cutting efficiency depending on fabric width.
Rectangular lumbar cushions can have different cutting efficiency from square cushions and may fit differently across the fabric width.
If the front and back use different fabrics, calculate the two materials separately rather than treating them as one identical fabric construction.
The amount of fabric needed for a cushion cover depends on the finished size, cut dimensions, panel arrangement, usable fabric width, seam allowance and production wastage. A simple square cushion therefore does not have one universal fabric-consumption figure.
Two factories can also report slightly different consumption for the same product if their cutting markers, fabric widths or wastage assumptions are different.
A cushion cover measuring 45 × 45 cm after sewing cannot normally be cut exactly 45 × 45 cm. Additional material is needed around the edges so the panels can be stitched together.
If a factory uses a 1.5 cm seam allowance on each edge, a simplified cut panel for a 45 × 45 cm finished cushion becomes approximately 48 × 48 cm before considering any special construction, shrinkage or decoration requirements.

Fabric is normally purchased by linear length, not simply by square metre. The width of the fabric therefore determines how many cushion panels can potentially fit across the roll.
A 140 cm-wide fabric may produce a different cutting yield from a 150 cm-wide fabric even when the fabric price and cushion size are otherwise identical.
This calculator uses an area-based planning method. It determines the total panel area and converts that area into approximate linear fabric consumption using the entered fabric width.
In actual manufacturing, factories normally arrange multiple panels into a cutting marker to maximize fabric utilization. Depending on cushion dimensions and fabric width, a marker can be more or less efficient than a theoretical area calculation.
For bulk production, the final fabric order should ideally be based on an approved production marker plus suitable fabric and production allowances.
Patterned fabrics can increase cushion-cover consumption because panels may need to be positioned so the design is centred, aligned or matched between pieces.
Some fabrics have a visible pile, nap, sheen or directional weave. Rotating one cushion panel by 90 or 180 degrees may create a visibly different appearance.
When all panels must be cut in the same direction, factories have fewer opportunities to optimize the cutting marker, so consumption can increase.
Many decorative cushion covers use a premium front fabric and a different plain backing fabric. Examples include embroidered front panels with cotton backs, tufted fronts with canvas backs, and printed fronts with plain coordinated fabric.
In these cases, do not calculate both panels as though they use one identical fabric. Estimate the decorative front fabric and backing fabric separately using their respective widths and production allowances.
An envelope cushion closure usually uses overlapping back panels instead of a zipper. The overlap requires additional fabric beyond the simple finished width of the cushion.
For accurate envelope-cover consumption, the dimensions of each overlapping back panel should be specified separately rather than assuming a standard two-panel model.
The main calculator estimates principal cushion panels. It does not automatically calculate separate fabric strips required for self-piping, flange borders, ruffles or other decorative fabric trims.
If self-piping is used, additional fabric may be required for bias or straight-cut strips depending on the construction and desired appearance.
Some fabrics shrink during washing, finishing or pre-treatment. If the cushion cover must achieve a specific finished size after processing, the factory may need to increase cut dimensions or order additional fabric.
Buyers should confirm expected shrinkage before finalizing fabric consumption, especially for cotton, linen, handwoven fabrics and washed products.
There is no single correct wastage percentage for every cushion-cover programme. Wastage depends on fabric quality, design, cutting efficiency, pattern repeat, directional restrictions, shrinkage and production control.
A small error per cushion can become a significant fabric difference when multiplied across hundreds or thousands of pieces.
For example, an underestimate of only 0.03 metres per cushion becomes 30 metres across an order of 1,000 pieces. This is why bulk production should use verified marker consumption rather than relying exclusively on early-stage estimates.
When comparing cushion-cover quotations, buyers can ask suppliers to provide or confirm the fabric consumption assumption behind the price. A significant difference in consumption can explain part of the price difference between factories.
Calculated production consumption is not always the same as the amount of fabric that should be purchased. Buyers and factories may need additional allowances for fabric inspection, testing, colour continuity, sample development, replacement pieces, shrinkage and supplier roll lengths.
Fabric suppliers can also have minimum order quantities by colour, design or quality, so the practical purchase quantity may exceed the theoretical consumption.
A complete specification allows a factory to prepare a more realistic cutting estimate.
