The usable fabric width determines how many individual widths must be sewn together to create the required flat curtain width. Conventional furnishing fabric is commonly supplied in relatively narrow widths, while wide-width curtain fabrics can sometimes be used differently.
If a curtain requires 480 cm of flat width and the usable fabric width is 140 cm, the manufacturing calculation must round up to complete fabric widths. Partial widths cannot always be treated as perfectly efficient because seams, pattern matching and panel distribution must be considered.
In conventional curtain fabrication, a drop is one vertical cut length taken from the fabric roll. Several drops may be joined side by side to create the required curtain width.
The number of drops is generally determined by dividing the required flat curtain width by the usable fabric width and rounding upward to the next complete width.
Each drop normally has the same cut length so that the finished curtain aligns correctly.
Pattern repeat is especially important for printed, jacquard and woven patterned curtains. When multiple fabric widths are joined, the motifs should normally align across the seams.

Standard furnishing fabrics are commonly cut into vertical drops and joined together. Wide-width fabrics can be significantly wider and may allow alternative cutting orientations or seamless curtain construction.
However, wide-width fabric does not automatically mean lower consumption. The orientation of the pattern, fabric grain, finishing width and required curtain dimensions must all be considered.
