CBM, or cubic metre, is one of the most important measurements used in international freight and container planning. It represents the amount of three-dimensional space occupied by a packed shipment.

CBM means cubic metre. It measures the volume occupied by a shipment rather than its physical weight.
In international freight, CBM is commonly used to describe the amount of cargo space required by cartons, crates, pallets or other packed units. One cubic metre represents a cube measuring one metre long, one metre wide and one metre high.
For ocean freight, shipment CBM is particularly important for LCL cargo and for estimating how much of a container a shipment may occupy.
To calculate CBM, multiply the carton length, width and height after converting all dimensions to metres.
If dimensions are measured in centimetres, divide each dimension by 100 before multiplying them.

A carton measuring 60 cm × 40 cm × 35 cm is equivalent to 0.60 m × 0.40 m × 0.35 m.
Multiplying these dimensions gives 0.084 CBM per carton. If the shipment contains 100 identical cartons, the total theoretical volume is 8.40 CBM.
Shipment volume influences freight planning because transport capacity is limited by physical cargo space as well as weight. Two shipments with the same gross weight can require very different amounts of cargo space.
LCL means Less than Container Load. Instead of using an entire shipping container, a buyer's cargo shares container space with other shipments.
Shipment CBM is therefore an important early input when requesting LCL quotations. However, freight pricing may use a weight-or-measure rule, minimum charges, origin charges and destination charges in addition to basic volume.
For FCL shipments, buyers often compare estimated shipment CBM with approximate container capacity. This can help identify whether an order may fit into a 20-foot, 40-foot or 40-foot high-cube container.
However, dividing container capacity by shipment CBM does not provide a physical packing guarantee. Carton proportions, orientation, palletization, container dimensions, door clearance, void space and weight distribution all affect real loading.
Container capacities vary by equipment specification and carrier. These figures are useful only as general planning references.

Nominal internal volume is not the same as practical loading capacity. Cargo rarely fills every cubic centimetre of a container because packed units do not always match the internal container dimensions perfectly.
Home textiles can vary greatly in packing density. Cushion covers, throws, bedding, rugs and filled products may occupy very different volumes even when their commercial value is similar.
Packaging optimization can lower freight volume without changing the product itself. For import programmes with high freight costs, carton engineering can materially affect landed cost.
Freight volume should normally be based on the outside dimensions of the final packed shipping unit. A carton supplier may provide internal and external measurements, but carriers handle the space occupied externally.
Measure the closed, packed carton rather than relying only on an empty-carton specification because packed cartons may change shape slightly.
If cartons are palletized, the shipment volume should be calculated using the dimensions of the completed palletized load rather than simply adding individual carton CBM.
Pallet footprint, stacking pattern, total load height and overhang can change the actual volume presented to the carrier.
CBM measures volume, while kilograms measure mass. Freight decisions often consider both because a shipment can be light but bulky or compact but very heavy.
Shipment CBM describes cargo volume. Air and courier carriers commonly convert package dimensions into a volumetric or dimensional weight using a carrier-specific divisor.

Freight can materially change the landed economics of an imported product. Knowing approximate shipment volume early allows buyers to evaluate packaging, order quantity and freight options before production is finalized.
The calculator assumes all entered cartons have the same external dimensions. If a shipment contains multiple carton sizes, calculate each carton group separately and add the resulting CBM values.
Final freight bookings should use confirmed packing lists and actual packed measurements because production packing, compression, palletization and carton tolerances can change the final shipment volume.
