A larger 200 × 300 cm rug has an area of 6 square metres. A measured finished weight of 18 kg corresponds to approximately 3,000 GSM.
A 120 × 180 cm rug has an area of 2.16 square metres. A finished weight of 5.40 kg produces an estimated GSM of 2,500.
Square rugs use the same width × length calculation. A 1.5 × 1.5 metre rug has an area of 2.25 m².
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It expresses how much the specified rug construction weighs for each square metre of surface area.
If a finished rug weighs 2,500 grams for every square metre, it can be described mathematically as approximately 2,500 GSM.
However, buyers should always confirm exactly what a supplier's GSM specification refers to. It may describe finished product weight, pile weight, face weight or another component of the carpet construction.

Total rug weight tells you how heavy the entire finished item is. GSM normalizes that weight against surface area.
This distinction is useful when comparing rugs of different sizes. A 200 × 300 cm rug will naturally weigh more than a 120 × 180 cm rug if both use the same construction, but their GSM can remain approximately the same.
One of the most important issues in carpet and rug sourcing is understanding what a quoted weight actually represents.
A supplier may quote pile weight, face weight or complete finished weight. These measurements are not interchangeable.
Different rug manufacturing techniques distribute material differently across the surface area. As a result, GSM can vary substantially between constructions.
Fibre type influences yarn density, performance and construction, but buyers should avoid assuming a standard GSM based only on material.

Once a representative finished GSM has been calculated, the theoretical weight of another size using the same construction can be estimated.
For example, if a rug construction measures approximately 2,500 GSM, a 2 m² rug would theoretically weigh about 5 kg while a 6 m² rug would theoretically weigh about 15 kg.
This method assumes construction, materials, pile density and backing remain substantially unchanged between sizes.
Higher GSM can indicate more material weight, but manufacturing cost does not increase according to GSM alone.
Cost also depends on fibre price, yarn count, construction, labour, design complexity, number of colours, tufting or weaving time, backing, finishing, order quantity, packaging and commercial terms.
A lower-GSM hand-knotted or highly complex rug could therefore cost significantly more than a heavier but simpler construction.

A buyer should evaluate GSM together with fibre quality, yarn characteristics, pile density, pile height, weaving or tufting construction, backing system, colourfastness, workmanship, durability and intended use.
If weight is an important product characteristic, describe exactly what measurement the specification refers to rather than simply writing a GSM number.
GSM provides useful data, but a meaningful comparison requires a broader product specification.
The result depends entirely on the dimensions and weight entered. Incorrect measurements, scale error, unusual moisture content or inclusion/exclusion of product components will affect calculated GSM.
For formal product specifications, laboratory testing, quality-control acceptance or commercial disputes, use an agreed measurement and testing method rather than relying solely on an online calculator.
Make sure every supplier is describing the same type of weight. A 2,500 GSM finished rug specification should not automatically be compared with a quotation describing 2,500 GSM pile weight.
Confirm whether backing, foundation, latex and finishing are included.
Hand tufted, woven, knotted and flatwoven products should not be compared on GSM alone.
