What Does CBM Mean in Shipping?

CBM means cubic meter. One cubic meter represents a volume measuring one meter long, one meter wide and one meter high.

In international trade, CBM is widely used to describe how much physical space cargo occupies. It is particularly important in ocean freight because less-than-container-load shipments are commonly evaluated partly according to cargo volume.

A shipment can consist of cartons, bales, crates, rolls, pallets or other packages. The external volume of each shipping unit contributes to the total shipment CBM.

Container Capacity Is Not Simply Total CBM

A shipment showing 70 CBM does not automatically mean it will fit perfectly into a container with a nominal volume near 76 CBM.

Physical loading depends on carton dimensions and how efficiently those dimensions fit within the container. Cargo can leave unusable voids even when mathematical volume appears sufficient.

CBM and Air Freight Are Different from Volumetric Weight

CBM measures physical volume. Air freight and courier services often calculate volumetric or dimensional weight using package dimensions and a carrier-specific divisor.
