Circular area does not increase in direct proportion to diameter. Because the radius is squared in the area formula, increasing the diameter creates a much larger increase in total surface area.
For example, a 100 cm round rug has an area of approximately 0.785 m², while a 200 cm round rug has an area of approximately 3.142 m². The diameter doubled, but the area became four times larger.
This relationship is important when estimating rug weight, material requirement and manufacturing cost across different sizes.
If approximate finished GSM is known, rug surface area can be used to estimate theoretical rug weight.
A 200 cm round rug has approximately 3.142 m² of surface area. At an effective finished weight of 2,500 grams per square metre, its theoretical weight would be approximately 7.85 kg.
Actual rug weight can vary with material, pile, construction, backing, finishing and moisture, so sample or production weights should be used whenever available.
Some rug quotations and internal costing systems use a rate per square metre or square foot. Once the rug area is known, an indicative cost can be estimated by multiplying the surface area by the applicable production rate.
Actual factory prices can also depend on material, construction, design complexity, colour count, pile height, yarn consumption, backing, finishing, MOQ, packaging and commercial terms.
Area is an important starting point for material planning, but surface area alone does not determine exact yarn consumption.
Hand-tufted, woven, knotted, braided and flatwoven rugs have very different material structures. Yarn requirement can therefore depend on pile height, density, construction technique, yarn count, fibre type and wastage in addition to area.
The geometric surface-area formula remains the same regardless of manufacturing technique, provided the finished rug is circular. What changes is how that surface area translates into weight, cost and material consumption.

Circumference is the distance around the outside edge of a circular rug. While it is not needed to calculate surface area, it can be useful when evaluating certain edge-finishing requirements.
For example, binding, decorative edging, stitching or other perimeter-based operations may relate more closely to circumference than surface area.
Manufacturers can produce circular rugs in custom sizes depending on construction, machinery, design and production feasibility. A buyer may therefore specify 135 cm, 175 cm, 220 cm or another custom finished diameter rather than limiting a collection to common retail sizes.
