How Is Rectangular Rug Weight Calculated?

The theoretical weight of a rectangular rug can be estimated when its finished dimensions and approximate finished GSM are known.

The first step is to convert the rug width and length into metres. Multiplying those dimensions gives the finished surface area in square metres. The area is then multiplied by GSM, or grams per square metre, to estimate total weight.

This approach works well for preliminary comparisons between rug sizes made with substantially the same construction.

Why Rug Area Is the Basis of Weight Calculation

Rug weight should scale with surface area rather than with width or length independently. If both dimensions increase, the total amount of material required across the surface also increases.

A 100 × 200 cm rug has an area of 2 m², while a 200 × 400 cm rug has an area of 8 m². Although both width and length have doubled, total area has increased four times.

When construction and GSM remain the same, theoretical finished weight therefore also increases approximately four times.

What Does GSM Mean for a Rectangular Rug?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It expresses how much one square metre of the specified construction weighs.

If a rug has a finished weight specification of 2,500 GSM, each square metre theoretically contributes approximately 2.5 kg to the finished product weight.
