A common European and international rug size can be converted into metres before multiplying width and length.
Large rugs can contain significantly more surface area than medium-size products, which directly affects many material and cost calculations.
Round rug area is calculated using radius. A 150 cm diameter rug has a radius of 75 cm or 0.75 metre.
An oval rug occupying the same overall width and length as a rectangular rug has less surface area because the corners are removed by the elliptical form.

Finished rug dimensions describe width and length, but many commercial and manufacturing calculations require the actual surface area of the product.

Rectangular rugs are the simplest to calculate. Convert the finished width and length into the same unit and multiply them.
For example, a 160 × 230 cm rug converts to 1.60 × 2.30 metres. Its finished surface area is therefore 3.68 square metres.
The same principle applies to square rugs. A 200 × 200 cm square rug measures 2 × 2 metres and therefore has an area of 4 m².
A round rug should not be calculated by multiplying diameter by diameter because that would calculate the area of the surrounding square rather than the circle.
Instead, divide the diameter by two to determine the radius. Square the radius and multiply the result by π.
An oval or elliptical rug uses its maximum finished width and maximum finished length. Each measurement is divided by two and the two resulting radii are multiplied together with π.
Because an oval does not fill the corners of its overall rectangular footprint, its surface area is smaller than a rectangular rug with identical maximum width and length.

Factories frequently use finished area as one of several inputs when planning a rug order. Area alone does not define the full manufacturing requirement, but it provides a standardized basis for comparing products.
Once rug area is known, theoretical weight can be estimated if a representative finished GSM is available.
For example, a 160 × 230 cm rug has an area of 3.68 m². If the relevant finished construction weighs approximately 2,500 grams per square metre, its theoretical finished weight would be about 9.20 kg.
Actual rug weight can vary because of yarn, pile, backing, latex, finishing and manufacturing tolerance, so production samples should be used for final shipping planning.
When different rug sizes are quoted at different prices, converting each product into a price per square metre can provide another way to compare commercial values.
For example, if a 3.68 m² rug costs $55, its equivalent rate is approximately $14.95 per m². This does not mean that every rug size should have exactly the same rate because labour, finishing, packing and construction economics can vary by size.
Area depends on both dimensions. If only the length doubles while width remains unchanged, area doubles. If both width and length double, area becomes four times larger.
This is especially important when estimating material, weight or cost for larger versions of an existing rug design.
The surface area of a circular rug depends on the square of its radius. This means a 200 cm diameter round rug does not have twice the area of a 100 cm diameter rug—it has approximately four times the area.
This relationship is important when scaling round rug weight, yarn consumption and price.
Organic, scalloped, asymmetric and irregular rug shapes cannot always be represented accurately using a simple rectangle, circle or ellipse.
For preliminary planning, buyers may use a bounding rectangle or divide the design into smaller geometric areas. For production costing, the manufacturer should calculate from the final artwork, CAD file, tufting map or approved technical drawing.
Buyers normally specify the intended finished rug dimensions. During manufacturing, factories may work with larger temporary dimensions because of trimming, finishing, washing or shrinkage allowances.
For commercial rug-area comparison, use the agreed finished size unless the calculation specifically relates to raw-material or manufacturing-stage consumption.
Textile and handmade rug manufacturing can involve dimensional tolerance. A rug ordered at 160 × 230 cm may not measure exactly those dimensions at every point after weaving, tufting, washing or finishing.
Where size is commercially important, buyers should agree acceptable finished dimensional tolerances with the supplier.
Two rugs with identical surface areas can have dramatically different manufacturing prices. A handwoven wool rug, a printed cotton rug, a hand-tufted polyester rug and a braided jute rug can all have the same area while using completely different materials, processes and labour inputs.
Area calculation is useful for planning, but a supplier requires a complete product specification to prepare a meaningful commercial quotation.
