Round rug weight starts with circular surface area. The diameter is divided by two to obtain the radius. Circular area is calculated from π × radius². The resulting square metres are multiplied by finished GSM and converted from grams into kilograms.

A one-metre-diameter circular rug has a radius of 0.5 metre and a surface area of approximately 0.785 m².
Increasing diameter from 100 cm to 150 cm increases surface area by more than 50%, because area depends on the square of the radius.
A two-metre-diameter round rug has a surface area of approximately 3.142 m². At a heavier 3,000 GSM construction, product weight increases accordingly.
A large circular rug has substantially more area than a smaller rug even when the difference in diameter may initially appear moderate.
Suppose a 40 cm diameter round rug weighs 250 g. Its effective construction weight can be estimated and applied to a larger round rug if the material and construction remain substantially unchanged.
The theoretical weight of a round rug can be estimated by calculating its circular surface area and multiplying that area by the finished weight per square metre.
Unlike rectangular rugs, where area is calculated by multiplying width and length, a round rug requires its radius. The radius is half of the diameter, and circular area is calculated using π × radius².
Once the area is known, multiplying by finished GSM provides approximate weight in grams. Dividing by 1,000 converts the result into kilograms.
The diameter is the complete distance from one edge of a circular rug to the opposite edge while passing through the centre. The radius is the distance from the centre to the outside edge and is exactly half the diameter.
Most rug specifications are communicated using diameter, such as 100 cm round, 150 cm round or 200 cm round. This calculator therefore asks buyers to enter the finished diameter and converts it internally to radius.

Circular surface area depends on the square of the radius. This means that doubling a rug's diameter approximately quadruples its surface area and therefore can approximately quadruple theoretical weight when GSM remains unchanged.

The most useful value is normally the approximate finished product weight per square metre. Buyers should be careful when using a supplier's stated GSM because the quoted number may refer to pile yarn, face weight or another construction component instead of total finished rug weight.
For freight and handling estimates, finished-product GSM or measured sample weight generally provides a more useful basis.
If an existing sample uses the same yarn, pile density, backing and production construction as the proposed larger rug, its measured weight can be used to estimate effective GSM.
The sample area is calculated from its diameter. Sample weight in grams is divided by that area to estimate grams per square metre. The resulting effective GSM can then be applied to the target circular area.
This method is substantially better than multiplying weight according to the ratio of diameters because rug weight is related to surface area.
Consider a 40 cm diameter round rug weighing 250 grams. The 40 cm rug has a radius of 20 cm, or 0.20 m. Its area is approximately 0.1257 m².
A measured weight of 250 g over approximately 0.1257 m² corresponds to an effective finished weight of roughly 1,989 GSM.
A 250 cm diameter rug has a radius of 1.25 m and an area of approximately 4.909 m². Applying the same effective construction gives an estimated weight of approximately 9.77 kg.
This estimate assumes that material, structure, pile, backing and finishing remain substantially identical between both sizes.
Shape determines area, but construction determines how much material exists within each square metre. Round rugs manufactured using different techniques can therefore have very different finished weights even when their diameter is identical.
There is no universal weight for a round rug based solely on fibre type. Material composition must be considered together with construction density, yarn count, pile, backing and surface area.
Knowing approximate finished rug weight can help buyers evaluate several parts of a commercial programme before production is complete.
The squared relationship between radius and area becomes increasingly important with large-diameter rugs. Moving from a 150 cm diameter to a 300 cm diameter doubles the diameter but creates approximately four times the surface area.
