A fabric specified at 200 GSM theoretically weighs about 200 grams for every square metre of material. A 400 GSM fabric contains approximately twice the weight per square metre of a 200 GSM fabric, although this does not automatically mean it is twice as thick or twice as strong.
Fabric construction, fibre density, yarn characteristics and finishing can all influence the relationship between GSM, thickness and performance.
Buyers sometimes ask how much one metre of fabric weighs. A linear metre does not have a universal weight because its area depends on the fabric width.
For example, one linear metre of fabric that is 100 cm wide has an area of 1 m². One linear metre of the same GSM fabric at 150 cm width has an area of 1.5 m² and therefore weighs approximately 50% more.
This is why both GSM and fabric width must be known when calculating the weight of a linear metre.
If you want to estimate how much one linear metre weighs, multiply the fabric width in metres by the GSM and divide by 1,000.
For example, a 250 GSM fabric with a width of 1.40 metres has a theoretical weight of approximately 0.35 kg — or 350 grams — per linear metre.

To estimate fabric roll weight, calculate the total fabric area from usable width × roll length and multiply it by GSM.
For example, a 100-metre roll of 250 GSM fabric at 140 cm width contains approximately 140 m² of material. Its theoretical net fabric weight is about 35 kg.
The physical roll may weigh more because the cardboard or plastic core, wrapping and external packaging are not included in the theoretical fabric calculation.
Fabric may be commercially described using a nominal width, but the entire width may not always be usable for cutting or production.
