What Determines the Weight of a Cushion Cover?

The weight of a cushion cover depends on considerably more than its finished dimensions. Fabric GSM is important, but front and back materials, seam allowances, embroidery, tufting, piping, tassels, zipper construction and other components can all affect the final product weight.

Two covers measuring exactly 45 × 45 cm can therefore have very different weights. A lightweight printed cotton cover may weigh substantially less than a dense woven, embroidered or tufted cushion with decorative trims.

How Fabric GSM Affects Cushion Cover Weight

GSM means grams per square metre. A 300 GSM fabric theoretically weighs approximately 300 grams for every square metre of fabric area.

If a cushion panel has an area of 0.25 m², the corresponding theoretical fabric weight at 300 GSM would be approximately 75 grams before accounting for another panel, trims or decoration.

This relationship makes GSM useful for preliminary product-weight calculations when actual finished samples are not yet available.
