Two covers measuring exactly 45 × 45 cm can therefore have very different weights. A lightweight printed cotton cover may weigh substantially less than a dense woven, embroidered or tufted cushion with decorative trims.
GSM means grams per square metre. A 300 GSM fabric theoretically weighs approximately 300 grams for every square metre of fabric area.
If a cushion panel has an area of 0.25 m², the corresponding theoretical fabric weight at 300 GSM would be approximately 75 grams before accounting for another panel, trims or decoration.
This relationship makes GSM useful for preliminary product-weight calculations when actual finished samples are not yet available.
Many decorative cushion covers use different materials on the two sides. For example, a premium embroidered linen-look front can be paired with a plain cotton or canvas back.

When fabric construction remains identical, larger panels contain more textile area and therefore more material weight. However, a heavier GSM on a smaller cushion can sometimes produce greater product weight than a lightweight material used on a larger cushion.
For meaningful comparisons, buyers should consider both dimensions and GSM rather than size alone.
Cutting wastage should not normally be included in finished product weight because discarded fabric does not remain in the cushion cover. Seam allowance is different: the fabric inside the seams remains physically attached to the finished product.
For this reason, this calculator adds seam allowance to the panel dimensions before estimating fabric weight.
Embroidery adds thread to the base material and may also require stabilizers or backing fabrics. Highly dense embroidery can therefore add measurable weight to a cushion cover.
If your fabric GSM was measured after embroidery was already applied, avoid adding the embroidery weight a second time. If the GSM describes only the undecorated base fabric, use the decoration-weight field to add the expected finished embroidery mass.
Tufted cushion covers can be significantly heavier than plain woven or printed covers because decorative yarn is applied to the base fabric.
The additional weight depends on tufting yarn count, pile height, coverage, density and design. For accurate development costing or shipping analysis, weigh an approved sample whenever possible.
Decorative trims can appear small individually but may add a noticeable amount of material across a complete cushion cover. Four large corner tassels, dense fringe around the perimeter or thick piping can be especially relevant.
