For example, if 500 products cost a total of $5,000, the average cost is $10 per unit. The same principle can be applied to manufacturing batches, supplier invoices, packaging purchases, freight expenses or complete landed orders.
However, buyers should always identify which expenses are included before comparing two unit-cost figures.
The mathematical calculation is straightforward: divide total cost by total quantity.
If an order costs $25,000 and contains 2,000 products, dividing $25,000 by 2,000 gives an average cost of $12.50 per unit.

Product cost normally relates to the merchandise or factory quotation. Landed cost can incorporate additional expenses required to bring the products to the buyer's destination.

Once the complete landed cost of an order has been calculated, divide that amount by the quantity of saleable units to calculate average landed cost per unit.
For example, if the products, freight, insurance, duty and other import expenses total $30,000 for 2,000 units, the average landed cost is $15 per unit.
A dedicated landed-cost calculator should normally be used first when the individual import-cost components have not yet been combined.
If a shipment contains identical products, total freight can often be divided by the number of units to create a simple average freight cost per piece.
For mixed shipments containing products with very different sizes, weights or values, equal allocation by piece may not accurately represent the economic cost of each product. A more sophisticated allocation method may use weight, CBM, value or another commercial basis.
Total packaging expenses can also be divided by the number of products to calculate average packaging cost per unit.
Possible packaging expenses include polybags, cartons, labels, hangtags, inserts, belly bands, boxes, protective materials and pallet costs.
If products use different packaging configurations, costs should ideally be allocated by SKU rather than averaged across unrelated products.
Some costs remain relatively fixed regardless of how many units are produced. Examples can include artwork setup, printing screens, moulds, embroidery programming, development fees or production setup.
When a fixed cost is spread across more units, its impact on the average unit cost decreases.

Minimum order quantity can affect pricing because suppliers need to recover setup, material procurement and production costs across the quantity ordered.
A smaller quantity does not automatically mean a proportionally higher price, but low-volume orders may have less efficient material purchasing, processing and setup economics.
Buyers should therefore evaluate both total order value and cost per unit when comparing MOQ options.
Higher quantities can sometimes reduce average cost because fixed or semi-fixed expenses are spread across more pieces and production efficiency may improve.
If an order contains different products, sizes, colours or constructions, dividing the entire order total by all units produces an overall average. It does not necessarily represent the true cost of each SKU.
For mixed orders, buyers should calculate SKU-level cost wherever materially different products have different supplier prices, freight consumption, processing or packaging.
For basic purchasing analysis, buyers commonly divide total purchase cost by the number of products purchased. For profitability analysis, however, it can sometimes be useful to consider the number of units actually available for sale after defects, samples, damages or other losses.
If 1,000 pieces are purchased but only 980 are commercially saleable, allocating the full cost across 980 units produces a higher effective cost per saleable unit.
There is no single universal definition because the correct total depends on what you are trying to measure. The important principle is to define the cost basis consistently.

Cost per unit tells you what a product costs under the selected costing basis. Selling price is the amount charged to the customer.
A business normally needs to add enough commercial margin or markup to cover operating expenses, overhead, marketing, sales costs, returns, risk and profit.
After calculating cost per unit, use a margin or markup calculator to evaluate potential selling prices.
Once cost per unit is known, buyers and retailers can compare it with selling price to estimate gross profit and gross margin.
For example, if landed cost is $10 per unit and the product sells wholesale for $16, the gross profit before other business expenses is $6 per unit. Gross margin is calculated relative to selling price, not by simply adding a percentage to cost.
Markup expresses the increase from cost to selling price relative to the original cost. It differs mathematically from gross margin.
Businesses should avoid using the words markup and margin interchangeably because the same percentage produces different selling prices depending on which calculation is intended.
A lower cost per unit does not automatically mean one supplier is cheaper when quotations use different specifications or commercial terms.
The formula works in any currency because it simply divides the entered total by quantity. If total cost is entered in USD, the result represents USD per unit. If the total is entered in EUR, the result represents EUR per unit.
Do not combine costs from several currencies unless they have first been converted to a common currency using an appropriate exchange rate.
Suppose an importer purchases 1,000 cushion covers. Product value is $8,000, freight and insurance total $1,400, duty and destination expenses total another $1,100, making the selected total landed cost $10,500.
If the buyer allocates the full $10,500 evenly across 1,000 identical saleable units, the average landed cost is $10.50 per cushion cover.
If the shipment contains several different products, equal allocation by piece may not be commercially appropriate and SKU-level costing should be considered.
Knowing average unit cost helps convert a large order value into a number that can be compared with target price, competitor pricing and potential selling price.
This calculator divides one total amount by a quantity. It does not independently determine which expenses should be included, allocate mixed-SKU shipment costs, calculate live exchange rates or replace accounting and factory costing systems.
For meaningful commercial analysis, make sure the total cost and quantity refer to the same products and that all required cost components have been included before interpreting the result.
A unit cost is only comparable when both calculations use a similar cost basis. One supplier's factory price should not be directly compared with another product's fully landed cost.
Identify whether the number represents manufacturing, EXW, FOB, landed or another cost level.
Make sure cost and quantity relate to the same purchase or production batch.

Convert all expenses to a common currency before dividing.
