A carton measuring 60 × 40 × 35 cm can first be expressed as 0.60 × 0.40 × 0.35 metres.
Multiplying these dimensions gives 0.084 CBM per carton. If a shipment contains 100 identical cartons, total volume is approximately 8.40 CBM.
Shipment volume is a key logistics variable because freight cost is not always determined by cargo weight alone. Lightweight but bulky products can occupy substantial container or vehicle space.
CBM calculations should use the final external dimensions of the packed shipping carton. Product dimensions alone do not account for folding, protective materials, polybags, internal packing, void space and carton construction.
Measure cartons after products are packed whenever accurate logistics data is required.

Home textiles often have a relatively high volume compared with their product value or weight. Cushions, bedding, throws and certain rugs can occupy significant carton space unless compressed or packed efficiently.
Reducing unnecessary shipment volume can improve logistics efficiency, but packaging must still protect the product and meet buyer requirements.
A container has a nominal internal cubic volume, but the entire theoretical volume is rarely available for cargo. Carton dimensions, loading orientation, door size, pallets, voids, cargo weight and practical handling requirements all influence the actual number of cartons that fit.
For this reason, use CBM as an early planning metric and then use a dedicated container-loading calculation or physical load plan for more accurate estimates.

Smaller shipments may move as LCL, where cargo shares container space with other shippers. As shipment volume grows, a full-container option may become commercially relevant.
There is no universal CBM threshold at which FCL automatically becomes cheaper. Freight rates, origin charges, destination charges, lane, commodity, season and container availability all matter.
Use calculated CBM to request comparable LCL and FCL freight quotations rather than relying on a fixed rule.
CBM measures physical cubic volume. Volumetric weight converts package dimensions into a billing weight using a carrier-specific divisor or conversion rule.
For air freight and courier shipments, a carrier may compare actual gross weight with volumetric weight and charge according to its applicable service rules.
Some buyers, warehouses and logistics providers work in cubic feet rather than cubic metres. One cubic metre is approximately 35.315 cubic feet.

If cartons are loaded on pallets, the shipment's effective logistics footprint may differ from the sum of individual carton volumes. Pallet dimensions, stacking height, overhang, wrapping and non-stackable restrictions can create additional occupied space.
When requesting freight quotations for palletized cargo, provide the final pallet count, dimensions and gross weight rather than carton CBM alone.
