A factory cannot normally cut fabric at exactly the final required dimensions because the edges need material for folding, hemming and finishing.
If a bedsheet must finish at 240 × 260 cm and the production specification requires a 3 cm hem allowance on each side, the theoretical cut dimensions become approximately 246 × 266 cm before considering shrinkage or other production allowances.
Different brands can specify different hem constructions. A basic rolled or folded hem may consume less fabric than a deeper top hem or decorative border.
This calculator uses one general hem allowance around the sheet. For precise production costing, factories should apply the exact hem specification for each side of the product.
Theoretical fabric area is rarely identical to actual bulk consumption. Manufacturing typically requires a practical allowance for cutting, inspection and process variation.
